Devizes has 500 listed buildings within its historic centre - mainly to the south of the Norman Castle.  In the links below is a list of grade 1 and 2* buildings in Devizes. There is a an interesting listing too of those buildings that have survived since Norman times. This is organised by century.

Alphabetical listing of Historic Houses

 

The Bear Hotel founded by 1559. It was a coaching Inn and provided a social centre for the affluent in Devizes. It is still  the premier Hotel - Inn in Devizes.

 

Brownston House, 47 New Park Street - Grade 1 listed. The  attractive rear is shown top right. MPs, generals, prison Surgeon, School principal and retired spinsters lived here.

 

Castle.  - the history of Devizes Castle since 1080, aerial photos, plans since the 13th century and modern sales brochures. Right the west side of th emodern castle

The Corn Exchange, built in 1857 in the Market Place, this significant public building provides a host of uses to the Town.

 

Heathcote House - Grade 2* listed building on the Green. In the 18th century it was the parsonage for vicar of St. James and in the 19th century it was a popular boys private boarding and day Grammar school. A photo of this charming house on the Green is above left.

 

Hillworth House  the history of Hillworth House (grade 2) from ca 1737 and its 18th century grade 2* garden pavilion.The influential Meek family developed this house and garden from 1841 to 1924. It is still in private hands - now apartments - but is the centre piece of the public Hillworth Park.

8, Long Street, Devizes - a grade 2* House

 

Le Marchant Barracks  - from 1878 to 1959 the depot for the Wiltshire Regim, home to thousands of Wiltshire men and women over the years..

 

Old Bridewell , Bridewell Street - Devizes Prison in the 18th and 19th centuries and the first HQ of the Wiltshire County Police

  

Old Park House, Hartmoor, Devizes - a grade 2 building dating to at least 1773.

St. Johns Church, Long Street - this is a large report on our wonderful Norman Church

 

Schools in Devizes - most County and many Victorian Private schools have individual reports

 

Southbroom House  is home to Devizes School. It is grade 2 listed and was built 1773. The estate and an older house, burnt in the Civil War by the Royalists, dated back to at least 1500 and the time of John Drew (of Drews Pond).

  •  Log on to Images of England
  •  Select Advanced search from the left hand menu
  •  Take the time to log on - it is worth it.
  • To look at say the Listed buildings on Long Street, Devizes. Fill in the form as shown on the screen shot below. It really will give them all!

The Trust for Devizes has an excellent Blue Plaque scheme which has identified a significant fraction of important houses within  Devizes.Their website has a very interesting series of newsletters.  

 

They publish a Town Trail map and guide; this is available from the Devizes Tourist Office in the Market place and some bookstores.
