1) Pocket gods and godesses found near the Green in 1714
In 1714 William Cadby found a set of Penates or pocket gods near the ruins of an old house on the Green, Devizes. They were buried in a large urn with a capacity of about 6 gallons. The urn had been strengthened by enclosing it with roman tiles or bricks with Roman cement. James Waylen in the History of Devizes of 1859 gives a list of these penates "supposed names". His list is shown below the drawings.

2) Iron age - Romano British settlement in Brickley Lane Devizes
Earliest indications of inhabitants around Devizes are the Neolithic round barrows associated with the Beaker People on Roundway Down. There are also bowl barrows and the Iron Age hill fort of Oliver’s Camp that is just in Bromham parish. At first a promontory fort it was later changed to a rectangular univallate one.
A recently discovered Iron Age farmstead near Brickley Lane, Devizes became a Roman settlement, possibly with a temple and likely to have been associated with a Villa at Wick Green or Pans Lane in Devizes.
3) A survey of Romano - British Archaeological sites and monuments in 7 Parishes around Devizes; Devizes, Potterne, Bishops Canning, Roundway, Heddington, Bromham and Rowde.
